Elective programming is more than a scheduling choice โ itโs a reflection of what we value. When campers get to choose their activities, theyโre practicing independence in a real and meaningful way. Deciding what to try, what to stick with, or when to take a chance on something new helps kids learn to trust themselves and follow their interests.
Research supports what we see every summer: when children are given genuine options, they are more motivated, engaged, and confident. Campers show up to electives with energy and ownership because theyโre doing something they chose. That sense of agency builds confidence โ confidence to try, to learn, and to grow.
Electives are also where joy and connection naturally come together. When kids are excited about what theyโre doing โ from athletics and art to science, performance, or something brand new โ fun follows. Starting with common interests makes connection easier, and those experiences often grow into friendships that last beyond the summer.
At Elmwood, our co-ed elective program is designed to grow with campers, offering age-appropriate choice that builds independence while fostering relationships. Kindergartners are gently introduced to choice through K Club, where choosing feels exciting and safe. 1st through 4th graders select a new Morning Club each week, exploring a wide range of interests and connecting with peers who share their enthusiasm.
As campers grow, choice deepens. 3rd and 4th graders commit to multi-week afternoon Intensives, allowing them to build skills and confidence over time with the same group. By 5th and 6th grade, campers take even greater ownership, choosing a two-week Major and a weekly Minor, balancing commitment with exploration.
